My Review: Fifty Shades of Grey was a completely new type of audiobook for me and I found myself caught up in the story, but dreading the erotic scenes.  E.L. James has personality rich characters that find themselves together after an unintended meeting. And by together, we mean more than friends. More than lovers. Freaky… um… sex hounds? I’m not sure what to call them.

Fifty Shades of Grey features two main characters, Anastasia Steele and multi-millionaire Christian Grey. The two meet after Ana’s roommate Kate falls ill and can’t interview Christian for their college newspaper. Ana steps up to the plate and ventures to Christian’s office in her old VW Bug and literally falls into his office. Ana is drawn to Christian by his gorgeous appearance and demeanor and surprisingly she manages to finish the interview without stumbling over her words too much. She can tell he’s a little strange, but man… he’s HOT!

Shortly after, kinky, dirty and nasty sex begins and continues throughout the entire audiobook. Here’s the thing people… I’m a married woman. I’m only 29, so my husband and I know how to have fun. But never in a million years would I do, or let him do to me the things these freaks do. Maybe some folks like to try different things, but Christian has this room with… whips, chains, shackles, feathers, canes, etc. He calls it his “Play Room” and after Ana sees it, she dubs it the “Red Room of Pain”. Why on earth she didn’t run screaming from his home, I’ll never know.

As an author, I think E.L. James is extremely talented! This story was amazing, but I really didn’t like the erotic stuff. It’s just strange and it makes me feel like a voyeur. Now, if you don’t mind that kind of reading and listening, you’ll love Fifty Shades of Grey. Top notch story for me, not so great on the “action” scenes.

Bear in mind, Fifty Shades of Grey is book one in the Fifty Shades series by James and the story of Ana and Christian continues in those books. I won’t be listening to books two and three because I’m assuming the erotic nature will continue. I hate that I can’t push through, especially because ya’ll know I love a great series.

I couldn’t help myself, I had to include this clip from Ellen’s show. There’s been a lot of hype about this book and here’s Ellen’s recording the audiobook version herself…

Narrator Review: I thought Becca Battoe’s narration had it’s highs and lows. On one hand, she did an amazing job narrating Ana and Kate and on the other, she basically butchers the narration of Christian and any other male character, especially José. Becca has a wonderful speaking voice and kept a nice, steady pace throughout.
