Twilight: The Twilight Saga, Book 1

Author: Stephanie Meyer

Read by: Ilyana Kadushin

Publisher’s Summary: About three things I was certain.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him, and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be, that thirsted for my blood.

And Third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Isabella Swan’s move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife, between desire and danger.

Deeply sensuous and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

Don’t miss the other titles in the Twilight Saga.

Giveaway! “Life in the Slow Lane” Audiobook

Our friend and author Thomas M. Sullivan has blessed us with two digital copies of Life in the Slow Lane to give away to a few great audiobook fans!

To read my full review of Life in the Slow Lane, go here! This audiobook is published by Coolbeat Audiobook Publishing.

Publisher’s Summary: A satirical telling of the author’s experiences as a Drivers Ed instructor. Being an instructor for a private Drivers Education company sounded like the launch of a career that would last a lifetime…. Not! Thomas’s “carma”, was a short, but colorful, stint in the instructor’s seat. The author learned more than he wanted about driving cars better suited for the junk yard, nice kids with angry parents, suburban angst, and being a buckled-in therapist. It’s an irreverent account of one man’s descent from hope to a struggle to escape the chaos of subprime suburbia. Life in the Slow Lane celebrates the humor, resolve, and intelligence teenagers use to survive the dysfunctional world their elders have created. Let’s just say they were lucky to have Thomas controlling the brakes.

11-22-63: A Novel

Author: Stephen King

Read by: Craig Wasson

Publisher’s Summary:

On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King – who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer – takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a 35-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away: a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than 50 years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life – like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963 – turning on a dime.

Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession – to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world – of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading, eventually of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful – and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

Free Audiobook – Water for Elephants

EXPIRED!!

By: Sue Gruen

Read by: David LeDoux, John Randolph Jones

Published by: HighBridge Audio

Publisher’s Summary: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story.

An atmospheric tale of life and love in a Depression-era traveling circus.

Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It’s the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. There he meets the freaks, grifters, and misfits that populate this world. Jacob introduces us to Marlena, beautiful star of the equestrian act; to August, her charismatic but twisted husband (and the circus’ animal trainer); and to Rosie, a seemingly untrainable elephant.

Beautifully written, with a luminous sense of time and place, Water for Elephants tells of love in a world in which love’s a luxury few can afford.

Free Audiobook – Wuthering Heights

EXPIRED

By: Emily Brontë

Read by: Carolyn Seymour

Published by: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Publisher’s Summary: Wuthering Heights is the sole novel of Emily Brontë, who died a year after its publication at the age of 30. A tale of exceptional emotional and imaginative force, it is an arresting vision of metaphysical passion, in which nature and society, heaven and hell, and dynamic and passive forces are powerfully juxtaposed.

Wuthering Heights is the name of an old house, high up on the Yorkshire moors, occupied by the Earnshaw family. Events are set in motion by the arrival of Heathcliff, a child waif who has been living the life of a wild animal in the slums of Liverpool. Adopted by the kind Mr. Earnshaw, he is bullied and humiliated after Earnshaw’s death by the new master of the house, Hindley. But Heathcliff’s passionate and ferocious nature finds its completion in Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine.

Publisher’s Summary: Wyldcliffe Abbey School for Young Ladies, housed in a Gothic mansion on the bleak northern moors, is elite, expensive, and unwelcoming. When Evie Johnson is torn away from her home by the sea to become the newest scholarship student, she is more isolated than she could have dreamed. Strict teachers, snobbish students, and the oppressive atmosphere of Wyldcliffe leave Evie drowning in loneliness.

Evie’s only lifeline is Sebastian, a rebellious, mocking, dangerously attractive young man she meets by chance. As Evie’s feelings for Sebastian grow with each secret meeting, she starts to fear that he is hiding something about his past. And she is haunted by glimpses of a strange, ghostly girl—a girl who is so eerily like Evie, she could be a sister. Audiobook Review – Ashes, Ashes

My Rating: ★★★★☆

Author: Jo Treggiari

Narrated by: Cassandra Campbell

Published by: Oasis Audio

Length: 9 hrs, 48 mins.

Publisher’s Summary:  The world has ended… What comes next? Smallpox epidemics, floods, droughts—for 16-year old Lucy, the end of the world came and went, stealing with it everyone she ever loved. Even the landscape of her beloved New York City is ever-shifting and full of hidden dangers. As the weather rages out of control, she survives alone in the wilds of Central Park, hunting and foraging for food and making do with the little she has, while avoiding roving scavengers and thieves. But when an unrelenting pack of vicious hounds begins to hunt her, Lucy is not sure she can continue on her own. Then, suddenly, she is swept to safety by a mysterious boy named Aidan, who helps her escape the hounds and urgers her to join a band of survivors. Reluctantly, she finds him after her home is destroyed; however, new dangers await her. An army of Sweepers terrorizes the camp, carting off innocent people and infecting them with the plague. Lucy and Aidan realize that it’s up to them to save their friends, but Lucy doesn’t know that the Sweepers have laid a trap—for her. There is something special about Lucy, and the Sweepers will stop at nothing to have her in their clutches. Jo Treggiari spins a thrilling tale of adventure, romance, and one girl’s unyielding courage through the darkest of nightmares.

©2011 Jo Treggiari (P)2011 Oasis

My Review: Ashes, Ashes is a newly released young adult audiobook. The story centers around a teenage girl, Lucy. Lucy’s parents and siblings are  dead after the plague spread through New York City and the country. She knows there are survivors but she stays hidden in her makeshift home in Central Park. Lucy struggles daily to forage enough food and water and maintain her shelter. She hasn’t bathed in ages and her few pieces of clothing are filthy and rarely washed. With no electricity, grocery stores, pharmacies or other luxuries, she makes do with her limited supplies, including a survival handbook.

After running from a pack of ravenous dogs, Lucy is rescued by another teenager, Aidan. Aidan pulls her into a tree and urges her to come with him to a safer place with other survivors. Naturally, Lucy is cautious. She’d been on her own for almost a year and she wasn’t sure she could trust Aidan, let alone a bunch of strangers.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The author, Jo Treggiari paints vivid pictures with her paragraphs and keeps the suspense rolling. Anytime I see “Young Adult” tagged on an audiobook, I hesitate. Okay, I’m a 28-year-old woman, and that’s pretty young, right? Like Lucy, I was extra cautious… But then again, her life was in danger, mine wasn’t. I downloaded, I listened, I loved. Treggiari has a winner on her hands here and now is the time to snag this one, since it’s free over at the Audiobook Community Sync: YA Listening until Wednesday, August 3, 2011 (click the link below).

Honestly, I’d say this would be a great audiobook for anyone. Don’t let the Young Adult tag worry you! Teenagers, twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings… give it a listen, you’ll enjoy it! Some folks have compared this to The Hunger Games, but I’m not leaning that way. It’s different, and great.

Narrator Review: Cassandra Campbell has a young, vibrant voice and suits this audiobook well. You could feel the emotions of Lucy seep through her voice and that added to the suspense.

Head over to Sync: YA Listening on the Audiobook Community for a FREE DOWNLOAD! Hurry! It’s available free until Wednesday, August 3, 2011.
