Book Blog Hop 8-20

The Book Blogger Hop is coordinated by Crazy For Books. Thanks for hopping through our blog! If this is your first time visiting you may be interested in some background info..

A little bit about us here at Audiobookfans.com…. We (my sister and I) are just a couple of book lovers that inadvertently fell in love with the world of audiobooks. Since that time we have happily consumed countless hours of audiobooks while commuting back and forth to work or mowing the grass or while getting some exercise.

This website is just a place for us to share our opinions/reviews of the books we listen to and where we may talk about how audiobooks have changed our lives.

Hopefully you will find us mildly entertaining or we will at least inspire you to give audiobooks a try.

Question of the Week:

How many blogs do you follow?

Not as many as I would like! I have a 4yr old and a 4 month old and they tend to occupy most of my free time. I usually hop through blogs in the evening after everyone has gone to bed. During the day I might visit one or two if they pop up on Tweetdeck. Of course I also use the blog hop every Friday to find new blogs to visit!

Audiobook Book Club

I love audiobooks! One of the problems that I always run into is trying to decide what I should listen to next. I usually have a “to be listened to” pile (an actual physical pile or a digital one in my audible.com account) that is several books deep. So unless I am in the middle of a series of books that I am totally engrossed in I will typically have a pretty difficult time picking my next listen. However this time Jason (@braincandybr) made the task a lot easier on me.

In case you haven’t heard, Jason has started a Twitter Audiobook Book club. Since I’m an audiobook addict this is right up my alley.

We are an internet (Twitter) book club that meets every THIRD Wednesday of the month to discuss a preselected audiobook title. Follow and join in the conversation with fellow audiophiles, using the twitter hashtag #abco. That’s every 3rd Wednesday from 7:00-8:00pm (est). Check the blog for contact information, title selections, updates, and general audiobook posts. – from http://audiobookclubonline.blogspot.com/

The first meeting is scheduled for September 15th and the first book to be selected for the audiobook book club is “Matterhorn” by Karl Marlantes. The below description is taken from Blackstoneaudio.com

Subtitle: A Novel of the Vietnam War
Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award
New York Times Bestseller
A Barnes & Noble Summer Discover Pick
Amazon Best Books of the Month, March 2010

In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. Two people stand in his way. The first is a well-loved, combat-weary lieutenant of his own age who desperately wants out of the bush but who does not want to leave his Marines with an inexperienced and overly ambitious officer. The second is an angry leader of the company’s radical blacks, who has all the political skill, savvy, and ambition of the protagonist. As the young lieutenant experiences the costs of combat, he sees the terrible results of his actions and begins to question the value of ambition and skill over compassion and heart.

Matterhorn is narrated by Bronson Pinchot. This will be the first book that I have listened to that is narrated by Mr. Pinchot. It will be a struggle for me at times to not think of him as Balki (I was a huge fan of Perfect Strangers.. no joke). So far I have only listened to the brief preview on audible.com and there was no sign of the lovable shepherd from Mypos.

This book has received excellent reviews. Goodreads Reviews | Amazon.com Reviews I can’t wait to get started! If you would like to get involved with the book club just follow the book club on Twitter  at @audiobookbc and check the blog at http://audiobookclubonline.blogspot.com/

Book Blogger Hop – Question of the Week

Do you listen to music when you read? If so, what are your favorite reading tunes?

When I read a book I typically like to be in a nice quiet place so listening to music is pretty much out of the question. If anything I might have the tv on but muted (unless there is a football game on).

Book Blogger Hop

Jennifer at www.Crazy-for-Books.com is hosting the Book Blogger Hop. Looks like a great place to find new and interesting book blogs. This is the first time we have ever participated in any sort of blog hop.

Book Blogger Hop – Question of the Week

What is your favorite new-to-you author so far this year?

John’s answer: That’s a tough question. I’ve had several “new author” experiences so far in 2010. Some of the best include Richard Kadrey (Sandman Slim), David Wellington (Frostbite and 13 Bullets), Justin Cronin (The Passage), Daniel Suarez (Daemon & Freedom). I think my favorite of 2010 though would have to go to Patrick Rothfuss for The Name of The Wind.

Maggie’s answer: Beverly Lewis. Her Amish fiction is great. It really keeps your attention and keeps you wrapped up in the story the entire time. She’s very detail oriented but not too much.. it’s just right. Like Goldilocks! lol

Ditch the ties.. give audiobooks for Father’s Day!

Father’s day is notorious for lame gifts like ties with lights that play music or “World’s Greatest Dad” mugs, t-shirts, etc. As a father myself, I feel for all my brothers out there who are practicing their “Oh wow, this is great!” fake smile in preparation for Father’s Day.

So listen up kids.. if you want to break this cycle of crummy gifts just keep reading.

If your dad likes to read (and what dad doesn’t) then I have a great suggestion for you. If your dad is like most guys he just doesn’t have enough time to read all the books that he wants to read. He gets home late from work and then has to spend all of his free time working around the house. His reading list just continues to get longer and longer each month as new books are released. With his busy schedule of work and chores there isn’t much time left over at the end of the day to relax and read.

Audible.com is the answer! With a subscription to audible.com  your dad can carry around his library in his pocket and listen to his books while he commutes to work or while he mows the lawn. Gradually he will actually start to look forward to those opportunities to pull out his iPod and listen to his favorite books.

With a subscription to audible.com he will receive credits each month that he can use on over 75,000 titles! Start him off slow with the 1 credit a month plan and let him upgrade as he starts to go through more than a book a month.

Plans start at $7.49/month for the first 3 months and then the price goes up to $14.95/month.

Still not convinced? Try Audible Now and Get A Free Audiobook Download with a 14 Day Trial. Choose from over 75,000 Titles.

He doesn’t have an iPod or mp3 player? Audible Starter Kit: Get 3 Audiobooks, Plus a Free Phillips Spark 2GB MP3 Player

So that’s it.. this was my attempt to save Father’s Day. It’s all up to you now!

“The Passage” by Justin Cronin

Next on my list of books to listen to is “The Passage” by Justin Cronin. “The Passage” is already being dubbed by washingtonpost.com as a novel

“for adults who’ve been bitten but can’t swallow the teenybopper misogyny of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series.”

I’m willing to admit that I did enjoy listening to the Twilight series. The audiobooks were very well done by Listening Library and Ilyana Kadushin’s narration sucked me in. However I did feel a little awkward listening to what was basically a vampire romance novel.

Anyway, the review by washingtonpost.com isn’t what convinced me to purchase this audiobook. It was Stephen King.

Every time I hear a book recommendation from Stephen King it gets me moving. Either straight to the library, bookstore or to my audible.com account. When he says it’s good I can usually take it for granted that I’m going to love it. When I saw a tweet come through @audible_com saying that Stephen King said when you read The Passage “the ordinary world disappears” I was immediately hooked and I was downloading it to my ipod about 10 minutes later.

So as soon as I finish the last 35 minutes of the book I’m listening to now (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which has been excellent by the way) I will be happily immersing myself into the world of “The Passage”. I’ll let you know if it lives up to the hype.
