Author Spotlight: Peter Clines

peter clines audiobook 14

According to his Amazon.com biography, Peter Clines wrote his first novel, Lizard Men From The Center of The Earth, at the age of eight. Clines’ overactive imagination stems from comic books and Star Wars. He has proven himself to be a writer of wit, style, and originality. The following four titles are well worth checking out for their sheer inventiveness alone. Clines offers a unique take on end of the world sagas which is beyond refreshing.  All the titles listed below are available in audiobook format from Audible.com and are truly brought to life by some great narrators!

Clines’ new release, 14, features a down on his luck bachelor whose apartment complex may contain more than meets the eye; with answers that may mean the end of everything. The audiobook is narrated by Ray Porter whose direct, journalistic approach to narration harkens back to the days of radio news flash bulletins. Audible customer ratings are strong for this audiobook, with an average rating of four out of five stars.

Two more audiobooks from Clines include Ex-Heroes: Book 1 and Ex-Patriots: Book 2In the first book of the series, Ex-Heroes establishes characters and situations following a global outbreak of zombies which has left the world in ruins.  The second book, Ex-Patriots, follows a band of heroes who face challenges and attrition two years after the end of the world.  Help eventually comes from a US Army battalion of super-soldiers; only this battalion was built prior to the outbreak leaving many questions to be answered.  Both audiobooks are narrated by the same two-person ensemble of Jay Snyder and Khistine Hvam which worked well to distinguish the female and male characters throughout the books.

Another audiobook from Clines, The Junkie Quatrain continues Clines’ unique spin on end of the world sagas.  The Junkie Quatrain consists of four tales of survival, in addition to four tales regarding the post-apocalypse. Christian Rummel lends his voice, along with Therese Plummer, and their work is top-notch.

Publisher’s Summary:

After being murdered by a mystery assailant, navigating his way through the realm between life and death, and being brought back to the mortal world, Harry realizes that maybe death wasn’t all that bad. Because he is no longer Harry Dresden, Chicago’s only professional wizard.

He is now Harry Dresden, Winter Knight to Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. After Harry had no choice but to swear his fealty, Mab wasn’t about to let something as petty as death steal away the prize she had sought for so long. And now, her word is his command, no matter what she wants him to do, no matter where she wants him to go, and no matter who she wants him to kill.

Guess which Mab wants first?

Of course, it won’t be an ordinary, everyday assassination. Mab wants her newest minion to pull off the impossible: kill an immortal. No problem there, right? And to make matters worse, there exists a growing threat to an unfathomable source of magic that could land Harry in the sort of trouble that will make death look like a holiday.

Beset by enemies new and old, Harry must gather his friends and allies, prevent the annihilation of countless innocents, and find a way out of his eternal subservience before his newfound powers claim the only thing he has left to call his own…His soul.

My Review:

Cold Days is the 14th book in the Dresden Files series and I can’t get enough Harry Dresden. I count myself fortunate that I got into this series with book 1 as an audiobook. So the voice of Harry Dresden has always been the one portrayed by James Marsters except of course for book 13 which was performed by John Glover due to scheduling conflicts. I was furious over this issue for quite a while and briefly considered boycotting that audiobook but I eventually gave in because I couldn’t resist finding out what happened to Harry after the cliffhanger in book 12. I can’t really complain about Glover’s performance in that book. He really did an admirable job. But he just isn’t James Marsters.

As soon as I started listening to Cold Days I just couldn’t stop. There is just something about all of the different elements, characters and inside jokes that makes me feel so close to everything going on in Cold Days. When Harry was reunited with his fairy guard and they yelled out something like “All Hail the Za Lord” I know I had a huge goofy grin on my face.

Personally I can’t think of any other series that could legitimately off shoot so many standalone novels based on each of the secondary characters. Books that I would be dying to read!

One thing about the fourteenth book in a series is that it makes it hard to write a review without giving away any of the juicy tidbits from the previous novels. So all I’m going to say is that this book is worth the wait. Throughout this novel Harry is kicking ass in his full glory (and at one point in his birthday suit). If you are a long time Dresden File fan then have no concern.. this is one of the best books in the series. If you are a noob and wondering what the heck a “Za Lord” is then please do yourself a favor and go and get a copy of Storm Front (Book 1 of the Dresden Files) and you can thank me later.

Audio Production: I was very glad that James Marsters was able to narrate this book. My personal opinion is that I would be willing to wait through what ever scheduling conflicts may occur if I am able to listen to James Marsters continue to narrate all of the Dresden Files books.

Overall: The only bad thing about not being able to stop listening to an audiobook is that they seem to go by way too quickly. After listening to a Dresden File book I usually have a Harry Dresden hangover that prevents me from getting in to any other book that I pick up. I usually have to take a break from fiction and dive in to some nonfiction in order to bring me back to reality. Cold Days was everything that I had hoped it could be and more. So much was revealed in this book that at times my head was spinning with all the possibilites and consequences. My mind was blown! Harry is back from the dead and The Dresden Files are alive and kicking

Publisher’s Summary:

What do you do after you’ve escaped Hell, gone back, uncovered the true nature of God, and then managed to become the new Lucifer?

Well, if you’re James Stark, you have to figure out how to run Hell while also trying to get back out of it… again. Plus there’s the small matter of surviving. Because everyone in Heaven, Hell, and in between wants to be the fastest gun in the universe, and the best way to do so is to take down Lucifer, a.k.a. James Stark.

And it’s not like being in L.A. is any better — a serial-killer ghost is running wild and Stark’s angelic alter ego is hiding among the lost days of time with a secret cabal who can rewrite reality. Starting to care for people and life again is a real bitch for a stone-cold killer.

My Review:

The Sandman Slim books have rapidly become one of my favorite urban fantasy series of all time. With each subsequent release in this series I find myself telling my friends over and over that “You HAVE to read this book!” Each book has been packed with memorable characters, dark humor and more action than you could shake a Na’at at.

I originally found this series as I was coming off a long run of 5 or 6 Dresden Files books. I was completely caught up with all of Harry’s adventures and I was craving more urban fantasy. Luckily I stumbled upon Sandman Slim (the first book in the series) and became acquainted with James Stark and his band of misfits.

Stark is a badass. He earned his nickname, Sandman Slim, fighting in the arenas of Hell for the entertainment of hellions. After his escape and being puked back into LA he had understandably become a little jaded. His priority upon his return was simply revenge. To destroy the magicians who sent him to hell. After the first few books, it seems like his priorities have shifted  a little.

The only caveat with this book is that you really shouldn’t try to read this series out of order. You really need to start with Sandman Slim and follow this series in order so that you can enjoy this book to it’s fullest extent.

Audio Production: MacLeod Andrews is Sandman Slim. He is Sandman Slim in the same way that James Marsters is Harry Dresden. Audiobook publishers please never use a different narrator for this series because it will seriously piss me off.

MacLeod completely blew me away with his variety of distinct voices. With so many unique characters it has to be a serious challenge to keep them all straight throughout the novel. What I love is that all the voices have remained the same throughout the entire series. Great job MacLeod and Brilliance Audio!

The Twelve by Justin Cronin – Audiobook Review

Publisher’s Summary: In his internationally bestselling and critically acclaimed novel The Passage, Justin Cronin constructed an unforgettable world transformed by a government experiment gone horribly wrong. Now the scope widens and the intensity deepens as the epic story surges forward with . . .

THE TWELVE

In the present day, as the man-made apocalypse unfolds, three strangers navigate the chaos. Lila, a doctor and an expectant mother, is so shattered by the spread of violence and infection that she continues to plan for her child’s arrival even as society dissolves around her. Kittridge, known to the world as “Last Stand in Denver,” has been forced to flee his stronghold and is now on the road, dodging the infected, armed but alone and well aware that a tank of gas will get him only so far. April is a teenager fighting to guide her little brother safely through a landscape of death and ruin. These three will learn that they have not been fully abandoned—and that in connection lies hope, even on the darkest of nights.

One hundred years in the future, Amy and the others fight on for humankind’s salvation . . . unaware that the rules have changed. The enemy has evolved, and a dark new order has arisen with a vision of the future infinitely more horrifying than man’s extinction. If the Twelve are to fall, one of those united to vanquish them will have to pay the ultimate price.

A heart-stopping thriller rendered with masterful literary skill, The Twelve is a grand and gripping tale of sacrifice and survival.

My Review:

Few books have had me as excited and impatient for the release day to finally arrive as The Twelve. After listening to the The Passage, the 36 hour long introduction to this series (see my review of The Passage here), I was already primed and ready for more intense viral action. Then came the waiting.. which always sucks.

Of course, I couldn’t have been happier when I finally saw this book on the early review list. I was downloading and moving this audiobook to my iphone just as fast as possible.

The Twelve picks up where The Passage left off. However it also goes back to the 90 year time gap of The Passage and fills in a lot of blanks. During this flashback we are introduced to man named Bernard Kittridge that earned the name “The Last Stand in Denver” (who quickly became one of my favorite characters) and a whole host of other characters struggling to survive as the virus spreads across the country. The impact that some of these characters have on the world 100 years into the future is incredible. In fact there were several jaw dropping (NFW) moments when I realized just how all of these pieces came together.

While there is a lot of intense viral action and suspense in this book there are also several times when it is somehow easy to completely forget about the virals. Of course, I’m pretty sure this was intentional because each time that I was lulled into this sense of security where I was falling in love with this incredible character that had just been introduced then inevitably something completely horrific happened. This was awesome! This situation happened frequently enough that each time I started to feel that the characters were the least bit secure then I started to be on edge for what might be lurking around the corner.

As much as I loved this book there are a few things that have bothered me ever since I finished this book. Unfortunately they are rather spoilery and I don’t want to elaborate on them here. I’m trusting that they are all part of Cronin’s grand scheme.

Audio Production: I thought that Scott Brick did an excellent job. I thought that his pacing and mastery of this huge cast of characters were perfect. His narration was superb and only served to elevate the overall effect of Cronin’s intensely creepy and complicated epic.

Overall: The Twelve was just about everything that I had hoped it would be. (Secretly I had been hoping that Justin Cronin had realized that there was no way to finish this epic story in just three books and had sagely decided to lengthen the series to somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 or 12 books.) If you enjoyed The Passage I think that you will love The Twelve. There seemed to be 2x the action packed into a more condensed novel.

American Sniper by Chris Kyle – Audiobook Review

American Sniper Audiobook ReviewMy Rating: ★★★★½

Author: Chris Kyle, Scott McEwan and Jim DeFelice

Narrator: John Pruden

Publisher: Harper Audio

Length: 10 hrs 22 mins

Download on Audible.com

Publisher’s Summary:

He is the deadliest American sniper ever, called “the devil” by the enemies he hunted and “the legend” by his Navy SEAL brothers….

From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.

A native Texan who learned to shoot on childhood hunting trips with his father, Kyle was a champion saddle-bronc rider prior to joining the Navy. After 9/11, he was thrust onto the front lines of the War on Terror, and soon found his calling as a world-class sniper who performed best under fire. He recorded a personal-record 2,100-yard kill shot outside Baghdad; in Fallujah, Kyle braved heavy fire to rescue a group of Marines trapped on a street; in Ramadi, he stared down insurgents with his pistol in close combat. Kyle talks honestly about the pain of war – of twice being shot and experiencing the tragic deaths of two close friends.

American Sniper also honors Kyles fellow warriors, who raised hell on and off the battlefield. And in moving first-person accounts throughout, Kyles wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their marriage and children, as well as on Chris.

Adrenaline-charged and deeply personal, American Sniper is a thrilling eyewitness account of war that only one man could tell.

My Review:

My father in law recommended this book to me. It was making the rounds at his work being passed from one  satisfied reader to the next and everyone only had good things to say about it. So it really didn’t take much more than that to have me interested in listening to American Sniper.

Chris Kyle’s story doesn’t pull any punches. He unapologetically expresses his opinions on his former occupation, military strategy and Rules of Engagement. Even though some of his opinions may strike a nerve with some people I think most will find it hard not to understand where he is coming from.

This book is more than just a record of all of Mr. Kyle’s kills. We also learn about Chris’s experiences during training to become a Seal. Chris and his wife also share a lot of personal information regarding the stress that Chris’s occupation put on their marriage. At first I thought these sections of the book were basically just there to flesh out the book a little but eventually I found that they really helped put everything in perspective.

Audio Production: John Pruden’s narration was spot on. He pretty much nailed the standard southern drawl and it fit this reading perfectly.

Overall: I was actually pretty surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Chris Kyle’s story is very interesting and definitely worth your time.

Disclosure: I listened to this book on audiobooks.com
