Liar, Liar: A Cat DeLuca Mystery Audiobook Review

My Rating: ★★★★☆

Author: K.J. Larsen

Narrator: Vanessa Hart

Length: 7 hrs., 18 mins.

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Publisher’s Summary: Caterina DeLuca, burned by her run-around now ex-husband, Johnnie Ricco, took the skills she mastered during marriage and opened her own private-eye agency. Now she’s armed with a camera, ready to print the evidence to 8×10 glossies for use in divorce court. The men in her big, whacko family, all Chicago cops and one a crook, aren’t sure what to make of Cat’s career choice. But hey, it’s serve and protect!

Then one Rita Polansky retains Cat. Rita’s liar-liar husband is the mysterious but seriously hot Chance Savino. Cat is hot on his heels when an exploding building hurls her out of her stilettos and into the hospital. The FBI claims Savino was killed in the fireworks, but Cat’s memory replays a different scenario.

She escapes the hospital to meet with her client, another liar. When Rita doesn’t show, Cat breaks into her home to find a dead Rita, a knife in her chest, and two clues at the murder scene: a clutch of Starburst candy wrappers – and Chance Savino, rummaging through Rita’s drawers.

As one surprise after another piles up while no one else sights Savino, everyone around Cat thinks she’s crazy – everyone except a determined killer who has put her on his “kill” list. Botched attempts force Cat to suspect Johnnie Ricco, or liar-liars from her earlier cases, or a Chicago power broker.

Can Cat, catcher of cheaters, catch a killer? And even if she does, this is Chicago, so what would she do then?

My Review: Liar, Liar is book one in the Cat DeLuca Mystery series by K.J. Larsen. Larsen brings us an audiobook chock full of excitement from the first page. In her Momma’s words, Caterina DeLuca takes dirty pictures. But not in the way you’re thinking, Cat takes those pictures to catch cheatin’ husbands.

Cat is the owner and operator of her own successful business, Pants on Fire Detective Agency. She’s well known in the area for catching cheating husbands and digging up dirt on anyone she’s paid to dig on. She has a huge Italian family, the majority are some of Chicago’s finest. Her dad, brothers and extended family are all weaved into the police force and she’s grown up around the madness.

Cat’s life is tossed into the line of fire after she takes a case from Rita Polansky. Rita hired Cat to keep an eye on her filthy, cheating husband, Chance. Chance isn’t Rita’s husband, but he is smokin’ hot with those cobalt blue eyes. Things get deep in Cat’s life really fast and the mystery builds throughout the audiobook as she hunts to catch a killer.

This was a great listen and I finished it in no time! I couldn’t put it down, and kept my iPod busy with this audiobook. Great, great story with great characters. I can’t wait for book two in the series, Sticks and Stones to be released on February 7, 2012.

Narrator Review: Vanessa Hart nailed this narration! Her voice was perfect for Cat’s personality and made her character shine. Hart’s timing worked great with scene changes and she moved seamlessly through the novel.
